Near Santa Fe, New Mexico

Opulent October, oil on paper, 8 x 22

Some of my best thinking occurs during hikes in the woods when I am free to reflect and can simply "be." The mountains surrounding Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico are home to some of my favorite trails. Even on an overcast day, walks among the trees are uplifting. I never tire of the autumn colors that seem to float in every direction creating a visual chaos that I wade through in awe.

Along Lake Cuomo, Italy

Shapes and Shadows, oil on paper, 8.5" x 22"

While in the lakes region of Italy, I was fascinated by the contradictions in spacial perception. There was activity bursting from the pathways in each lakeside town. Walking tours revealed layer upon layer of culture behind the colorful facades. Yet from the lake, everything was hidden behind the shadows.

"Floating," oil on Japanese paper, 8" x 10.5

The end of the school year always means travelling to the east coast to family and incredible comfort zones. This piece was done from a memory of Portsmouth Harbor where we spend time on the ocean kayaking,   clam digging, and of course, eating lots of lobster.

New Mexico

Oil on paper, 8.25" x 19"

Usually, when I walk in the woods, I'm captivated by the light coming thought the trees. but sometimes, the little bursts of color underfoot are just as intriguing. The printing paper i used for this piece allowed me to place layers of color one on top of the next just as I imagined the tapestry beneath my feet was created.

In the Sangre de Cristo range

"Autumn Approach," oil on paper, 13" x 9"

My girls asked me why I paint trees so much instead of dogs or zebras or something really cool...
Its not that I don't like animals, its just that the light that comes through the trees (as in my last post) and the vibrant colors of fall (this post) are so compelling I can't help myself.  Walks in the woods, no matter where I am remind me of my childhood when the grandiose structure of the trees was the only thing creating parameters in our fantasy worlds.  The light and colors just made our journeys into deep imagination that much more magical.

Abiquiu, NM

Among the Ruins, oil on board 8" x 6" + Frame

Behind a pile of rubble, a space abandoned and forgotten, I noticed an adobe structure. As I stood observing, the colors of the adobe walls seemed to absorb the colors of life around them;  instead of blending into the dried, mud landscape the structure became vibrantly part of it.

Desert Sounds

Desert Sounds, oil on paper, 10.5" x 7.25"

Sometimes the desert heat is so hazy and the feeling is so dry that it seems as though air has stopped flowing ...and then, small sounds become perceptible and your consciousness knows that the surroundings are full of life ad the stillness is just an illusion.

Purple Mountains, oil on board, 6" x 12"

The southwest has always inspired me to paint landscapes. In my memories of the places I've observed, there is always an undeniably strong emotion attached to the experience of place that remains long after the visit.
